Ever wondered how a mischievous puppy can outsmart older dogs? Join us in this lively episode of Pet Chat!

We share laugh-out-loud moments, like Bernoulli's surprising ability to share chews with his doggy siblings and his playful tussles with Ginger.

Our adventurous hikes with our dogs in Grotto Canyon and White Goat Falls add a touch of thrill as we navigate challenging terrains, creating unforgettable family memories.

Our episode takes a nostalgic turn as we reminisce about classic children's TV shows like Mr. Rogers and The Friendly Giant, while also celebrating the heartwarming achievements of Rich's daughter, Hannah, at the Nova Scotia Special Olympics. Rich's stories are brimming with pride and joy, capturing the essence of true sportsmanship. Amidst these anecdotes, we touch on amusing topics like glow-in-the-dark nails and invite our listeners to join the conversation, sharing their own pet stories and interactions.

Lastly, we dive into the playful dynamics between dogs, especially Baden's unique bond with golden retrievers, and share Ginger's adventurous escapades in her catio. Listener comments offer insights into dog breed affinities, while we acknowledge Dr. Zazie Todd's contributions at BarkFest. We extend our support to a listener grieving the loss of their cat and end with an entertaining tale of a little mountain goat-like character and his thrilling outdoor adventure with Beaker.

This episode is a delightful blend of humor, nostalgia, and heartfelt pet stories, perfect for any animal lover.

Speaker 1:

Hello pet enthusiasts, welcome to Pet Chat. My name is Jason Zakowski. I'm the dog dad of Bunsen Beaker, bernoulli Ginger. I'm not sure if Ginger's a dog, though she's a cat, and I'm not sure what. Norbert is the beaver, but anyways, that's who I am. My co-host is.

Speaker 2:

Hi there, I'm Chris Sikowski. I'm the dog mom to Bunsen, beaker and Bernoulli, the cat mom to Ginger, that's it. And chickens and ducks.

Speaker 1:

We have chickens and ducks. Yes, it's a whole thing. Chris, are you organized to share, or do you want me to go first? I can share, okay. So at this point, chris and I are going to share a couple stories about Bunsen, beaker and Bernoulli and it may get you to think about some questions. You can type them up if you're watching live or put them in the chat, or if you're on spaces, come up and chat. Go ahead, chris.

Speaker 2:

Okay. So the other two dogs love Bernoulli because he is a little bit of a mischievous puppy, and if by a little bit I mean a lot. So I was painstakingly organizing some things for the dogs to do and I had put the chews like a bag of chews in another bag because we had to go quickly, and so I thought I'll just put the chews in here and then we'll go, and then I'll, instead of itemizing them. Anyway, bernoulli goes, oh, and then he jumps up and he took out three. He can count, this dog can count. He took out three chews and bunsen and beaker were like whoa what? What is happening? Because he's got one for bunsen, one for Bunsen, one for Beaker and one for himself.

Speaker 2:

Well at least he's sharing. Sharing is caring. These other dogs were like what this is awesome.

Speaker 1:

I know.

Speaker 2:

So it kind of pays for his bitey self.

Speaker 1:

Oh my goodness, yeah, I love that.

Speaker 2:

In the Kahoot game did you talk about ginger maulings?

Speaker 1:

No, but that is a question that a bunch of people on Instagram were wondering about, because that's I forget when I posted that, but it got, I don't know. I think it's almost at 4 million views on Instagram. People are Lex Bondando from Instagram is from Argentina, is wondering how many days since the last Bernoulli mauling it would be the ginger mauling. Bernoulli doesn't really get mauled, he does the mauling and that answer is zero, zero days.

Speaker 2:

Still zero, still zero, zero days.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, still zero.

Speaker 2:

If we're counting the hours, it's better.

Speaker 1:

We should go to hours.

Speaker 2:

We should go to hours. It's is better. We should go to hours. We should go to hours. It's getting better. But Ginger puts herself in the line of fire. She really does.

Speaker 1:

But she still hasn't brought out her claws and I have to say Bernoulli is getting better, like he's not dragging her around like he did a month ago, so that's good. So on my end with my stories, we did a couple adventures this week. We went to the mountains and we did a hike with Bernoulli and Bunsen and Beaker. So we all three of us went and Bernoulli got a little gassed. It was about a kilometer and a half in and by the time we got there it's a place called Grotto Canyon in Canmore.

Speaker 1:

Wonderful hike and then it comes out to this bluff where you can see all of the Rocky Mountains, which is gorgeous. Maybe you saw some photos that we posted and there is a sketchy part that goes up over this really slippery rock and I was not wearing the appropriate shoes, but also I was scared of Bernoulli going up there and he was so tired, so we decided to pack it in and head back. And then we went to our hidden lake for lunch and Beaker got to do some swimming in this lake, which was awesome, and Bunsen and Beaker kind of lounged on shore and we had a nice lunch. So that was the one adventure. Do you want to talk about the other adventure we did with the dogs.

Speaker 2:

We went to a place just west of Nordig. Yeah, nordig is a small community here in Alberta. It's a beautiful location west of us which we don't typically go to. When I looked at the weather advisory, the weather advisory said, wow, it's going to be a high of 26 and a beautiful day, and as we were driving in, there was definitely some smoke. So when I looked up the wildfires Alberta they definitely said there was a forest fire that just started 13 kilometers west of Nordic.

Speaker 2:

So I'm like this isn't good, this isn't great, this is kind of terrible. But it was a place called white goat falls and I had heard about it from my nail lady oh yes yeah.

Speaker 2:

So she went with her friend and she told me about these orange flags that you have to look for, because she did not turn at the orange flags. There's not really a lot of great signage, and so she said you either can go like straight up or blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. And we actually ran into someone on our way in who told us that you look for the arrow on the ground, an arrow made of rocks. And we did, and it was pretty good going down. And then there was a super sketch, super sketch part.

Speaker 2:

Yes, before the super super sketch super sketch part before the super, super sketch part. And it's fine if we're just the two humans walking, but we had the three dogs and Jason and I were talking. Like when you have one dog, it's a little bit of work. When you have two dogs, not much. It's not that much more work, exponential when you have three it just increases exponentially with the amount of work anyway.

Speaker 2:

So here we are trying to organize our three dogs down this scrambly, scrambly, scary sketch down to the bottom we did. Yeah, all of our dogs have pros and cons. Pro of beaker she just runs through the water.

Speaker 1:

She doesn't mind, she'll swim beaker is a beaker is amazing hiker, like she does everything we ask yeah and then b Bernoulli's a little bit.

Speaker 2:

You know he's a puppy, so we have to be more aware of him he was launching himself.

Speaker 1:

He was launching himself into open space like if he wasn't wearing his harness, he would just fly down the cliff so that was the concern of having a puppy.

Speaker 2:

But then with Bunsen he doesn't really like the water. He does go in, and so there was a point where he was not sure, but he jumped it. He jumped the creek I. He does go in. And so there was a point where he was not sure, but he jumped it. He jumped the Creek I was like well good job buddy.

Speaker 1:

And it was so worth it. When we got to the falls, it was beautiful. We probably could have spent a little bit more time there, but there were these stupid black biting flies, these big biting flies, and every time you stopped you got bit. So that was annoying. I wish I brought my Crocs or like some water shoes, because I would have waded into the waterfall. Beaker loved it, she just loved it there.

Speaker 1:

Bunsen, when we got down to the waterfall he just laid in the mountain lake. He just laid in the mountain lake. So he was so hot and at that point that he was okay being wet. There was also this bog on the way down that Beaker and Bernoulli got into up to their heads. It was like this murky, dirty bog and they both of them decided to have like a Nordic bath or something in this bog and Bernoulli didn't want to go. I think it felt so good because it was a bit of a hike to get to that point. And then I'm like Bernoulli, it't want to go.

Speaker 1:

I think it felt so good because it was a bit of a hike to get to that point. And then I'm like Bernoulli, it's time to go. And he only had his head up out of the water and then he kind of like slowly sunk into the bog until only his little nose and his eyes were poking out, because he didn't want to go. It was so cute. I wish I got it on video, but I didn't. He was being kind of like, you know, a kid, it's time to go and they just shrink into the pool even more. You can't see me. Anyways, that was really. We've got some really cool photos and some video from that which, if you follow us, I've posted a few of those pictures and videos. Yeah, highly recommend it. Goat White, goat Falls, chris, highly recommend it.

Speaker 2:

Goat white, goat falls, chris. And if you don't want to go down the super sketch part, you can go to the right and go around up on the ridge. But then here's the kicker you have to go down, you have to rappel down yes the side of the mountain yeah so some nice camper or some nice hiker has put a rope there for you to rappel down? We weren't, we were. We thought maybe we would rappel up with the dogs. No, that wasn't happening.

Speaker 1:

I went up about. Yeah, I tried it and it was not safe. Do you think you could do? You think we could have done it without the dogs?

Speaker 2:

Chris, A hundred percent. We could have done it without the dog.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, 100% we could have done it without the dog.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, yeah, you would just go better to have the dog, so yeah it was not, it wasn't super, it wasn't like you're coming down a cliff, but it was pretty. It was pretty steep and I went up about I don't know a sixth of the way and Beaker was fine. Like if we had unclicked Beaker she would have made that, no, but Bernoulli was like sliding back, like because he's got, he's just a puppy right, he'd go ooh and he would slide back down the hill like a cartoon because it was kind of dusty and dirty Like. It was kind of like a dirt path, I guess.

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

But it was really comical because he's like, oh no, and he was like slowly sliding backwards so I had to grab him by his harness and I'm like, no, this is so dangerous, let's just go the other way. Which was fine.

Speaker 2:

Well, until I fell on my face.

Speaker 1:

Well, it's when you hike. Depending on if it's not labeled easy, the hike has challenges in it, at least in Alberta. Like a hike that's labeled moderate means you are moderately in mortal danger basically moderately remember the ink pots?

Speaker 2:

it should have said ink pots was moderate.

Speaker 1:

It means like you, you know you're moderately at risk for getting a heart attack from going up there.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, moderately, all right. One of the sponsors of Pet Chat is BarkAndBeyondSupplycom. Barkandbeyondsupplycom is a small family owned company that would love your support. There's a code Bunsen that you can use to save some money. They sell toys and treats and they have these really delicious peanut butter treats for dogs and joint supplements. We got the krill formation for Bunsen and he loves it. So check out BarkingBeyondSupplycom and use the code Bunsen. Save yourself some money and skip the big box store and help out a small business. All right, now, I haven't been able to get ahold of them. Usually there's a prize and they do a great job of having a prize. I haven't been able to get a hold of them. Usually there's a prize and they do a great job of having a prize. I haven't been able to get a hold of them, so we won't have a prize from Barkin Beyond this week. But I think, chris, we can have a prize. We can be our own sponsor and give somebody a prize.

Speaker 2:

Well, our other sponsor is the Science Podcast.

Speaker 1:

That's right. And so the Science Podcast could definitely give out a prize yeah, so at the end, if you're still around, we'll do a draw.

Speaker 2:

And I don't know, we got lots of stuff we could send you maybe a multi-tool, maybe a stress flask, something from the ginger bundle like mr dress-up okay, that's a very canadian reference it's true okay, so there was a guy named mr dress-up eddie coombs yeah, and he had casey and finnegan I think, I think his name was ernie. Yeah, didn't I say ernie?

Speaker 1:

you said eddie I said ernie okay I'm gonna go listen back.

Speaker 2:

I'm gonna listen, I'm gonna listen. Maybe I said eddie, but ernie okay okay, I don't know what I said, but anyway, very canadian had casey and finnegan and it was just really super awesome.

Speaker 1:

I'm tickled trunk and everything was great yeah, mr, dress up was amazing yeah I got to see him speak at red deer college, chris no, yep, he came when I was.

Speaker 1:

How lucky were you, I. It was like people. It was in my first year of my science degree, when I was in, when I was taking my science degree way back when he came and he spoke at red deer college and it was like all of these adults who were just like crying with joy for this older man from our beloved TV show who came to speak, about being whimsical and embracing joy. Right, that's what you know make-believe playing, like having fun playing around. Yeah, it was a really good, really good talk. Yeah, all right, should we move to community sharing? Did we miss anything?

Speaker 1:

Well, there's a lot that happened this week, but I think we can probably move to community sharing and hog up the time. Sure, okay, all right. So if you have a question comment, please type it up and we can throw it into the Jumbotron. If you're watching live, it's hard to interact with us live. If you are on spaces and you'd like to share a story, ask a question, request the mic. Chris or I will bring you up on twitter spaces, but please keep in mind that we do double check your account to make sure you're not a troll and you may not come up if your account is suspect ben, my personal trainer, said my nails were awesome too.

Speaker 2:

I got so many compliments and they're so bright. They're so much brighter than usual. Actually, guess what?

Speaker 1:

they glow in the dark what I know, that's I know it's crazy that is wild okay wild and crazy all right, we brought, we've brought up rich, so we'll throw the mic to Rich, who's on Twitter audio right now Spaces Hi guys, hey. Hello, how you doing. We are good, we hope you're well.

Speaker 5:

Well, grandson gave me a chest cold which has progressed to bronchitis, so I sound like a seal.

Speaker 1:

Oh no.

Speaker 5:

Yes, mr Coombs, wonderful Mr, mr coombs, the wonderful mr coombs love that guy.

Speaker 2:

Uh, he worked he worked with mr rogers yep and he was american.

Speaker 1:

He was. It was a canadian show, but he was an american.

Speaker 5:

That is true, yes, oh yeah, I grew up with casey as much as I've ever grown up. I grew up with Casey as much as I've ever grown up. I grew up with Casey and Finnegan. Oh, and back then it was Casey and Finnegan and the Tickle Trunk. Yeah, and I'll throw another Canadian reference in there Friendly Giant.

Speaker 1:

The Friendly Giant.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I watched the Friendly Giant I go, look, look, way up, and no one gets it, no one gets it Way up and no one gets it, no one gets it. Look way up, yeah, yeah, yeah. And they're like what are you?

Speaker 5:

talking about A chair for two to curl up Up in. Yeah, very yeah, no, it was so much. I mean the recorder, and was that? Greensleeves was the theme song that he had.

Speaker 1:

Oh, I forget.

Speaker 5:

I'm sorry, I can hear it in my head and I mean here's Rusty and I'll call here's Jerome and I'll call Rusty, or is it the other way around?

Speaker 1:

It's been a year or two, look way up and I'll call Rusty. Or is it the other way around? It's been a year or two, look way up and I'll call Rusty. I think that's what he said, which Rusty was a rooster, right Like a rooster puppet.

Speaker 5:

Yeah, and then Jerome was a giraffe puppet, yep. That is great, and everybody under the age of probably 40 or 50 is going. What the hell are they talking about?

Speaker 5:

Exactly the theme song was early one morning, I just we had the grandchildren for a few hours and I just got them home and asleep and my beloved wife came and relieved me. So anyway, there's not not a whole lot new and interesting. We've discovered that one of our cats really likes going in our trailer. Okay, she's, she's 16. She has three teeth, none of which match, none of which meet, and the other cats tend to bully her a bit around food and everything. So we've been to pei for four or five days. My daughter, hannah, was participating in the nova Scotia Special Olympics Summer Games in Wolfville. She came back with two golds, two silver and a bronze from swimming.

Speaker 5:

Oh Not that I'm proud of her.

Speaker 1:

Congratulations.

Speaker 5:

So we were taking the cat with us in the trailer. So we're taking the cat with us in the trailer and Baden dog is deathly scared of her because she keeps telling him that she's going to rip his face off from the ears, even though she's got no way of doing it anymore. She was just so good in the trailer. We started her off in a cat carrier but she didn't like that, so we just put her bed on the floor of my truck and she just curled up in that. Baden stayed up on the seat because the expression on his face was I'm not going near that. Drove to PEI, and she was fine. Drove to Wolfville she was fine, and we could leave the AC on the trailer for her, and if we left the screen door open she'd sort of sit there with her nose watching the world like a regal queen that she is. Her and baden used to argue over who got to look at the door, so that's my pet story.

Speaker 5:

I love it, I've been busier than a one-legged man in a butt kicking contest this summer oh man.

Speaker 1:

well, I'm glad you got time to go away with hannah that event so well done.

Speaker 5:

I know I pushed the Special Olympics and I'll push them again.

Speaker 1:

Oh, you're breaking up, rich, you're breaking up a bit. Sorry, I think you were talking about the special Olympics Go ahead.

Speaker 5:

Yes, yeah, you may see some sportsman TV, but if you want to see real sportsmanship, watch the special Olympics. They are just all such wonderful people.

Speaker 1:

What a nice message. I love it. Yep Anyway.

Speaker 5:

I'm in my truck, I love it, yep. Anyway, I'm in my truck. I'm about to hit a dead zone with the internet, so, um, I'll shut up unless I come up with something witty to say later.

Speaker 1:

Okay, take care of yourself.

Speaker 5:

You too guys.

Speaker 1:

All right, okay, so that was rich. Uh, his dog is Baden. Uh, he was on audio on Twitter. Okay, anybody else on Twitter or audio on Twitter spaces want to come up to share a story? Go ahead. I'm looking for comments that people have left. There was a bunch early on on Instagram, but I think we've answered them about Ginger. Some folks are commenting how much they love your nails on meta. What do you think, chris? Would she do it?

Speaker 2:

she would do it 100 yeah, she's pretty, pretty docile.

Speaker 1:

It's probably why she puts up with bernoulli yeah, I think so.

Speaker 5:

Oh Lord, those videos of Bernoulli torturing that poor cat are just an absolute boot.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, they're a series that's the first one went viral on Instagram, facebook and TikTok. So yeah, we hit a chord with that and of course we do monitor Bernououlli so he's not hurting the cat. If he does start to drag her, we stop it right away and that's that's pretty much stopped. It's more of like a pounce and they have a little wrestle and then they break off from it.

Speaker 5:

So yeah on on that note. One of my son's dogs, uh, used to enjoy chasing barn cats and they asked the vet what to do and more or less the response was don't worry about it, you'll look absolutely adorable with one eye if they scratch it out on them.

Speaker 1:

Oh man, yeah, we have heard that, that there can be horrific injuries. I guess you just have to roll the dice. They're very, very, very rare. But I think the same chance of that happening is the same chance of, like you know, a dog getting a stick and you don't notice.

Speaker 5:

They have a stick and they run with the stick and it hurts the dogs when sean was little, we had a cat that was declawed don't judge, and oh, he wasn't even talking, but he'd come up behind the cat and grab her by the tail and she would turn around and bat the snot out of his face with these gentle pet. Sorry, did I mention bronchitis? Um, and she would just go pat, pat, pat, pat pat on his face with her with her pot pads, and he loved that, so it wasn't really a deterrent for her to do that that's kind of how she does stuff with bernoulli, like she bats him, but she doesn't bring those claws out, so yeah it's amazing to control cats have over their claws.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, they're amazing creatures actually.

Speaker 5:

Now, with three cats, one dog and Mary, do I qualify as a crazy cat person?

Speaker 1:

Well, I think pet enthusiast is what we would say. It's been a lot to your right.

Speaker 5:

Yeah, that's why what you guys do is so important, because the timeline, cleanses and the foolishness really help one a person's mental health with all the silliness going on in the world yeah, that's something that we strive to do.

Speaker 1:

We strive to be. We do, you know, like we'll wade into science where it's appropriate, because we are a science communication account. But since we got Bernoulli we've been just, you know, just sharing the joy of having a little puppy. So appreciate the comment there, rich. But if you don't mind, we'll go to Snickerdoodle, who came up to speak, and then jump back in a second.

Speaker 5:

Sorry, I was just going to ask one more question. Yeah, go ahead. Did you ever come up with an activity book for little kids? We did. Yeah, we do.

Speaker 1:

It's the pup. Okay, there's a pup version and it's on the front page of our store. Yep, yep, we did, and I think, yeah, we're pretty proud of it. We got some good feedback from the little little kids. So, yeah, All right, we'll go to Snickerdoodle. Hello, go ahead.

Speaker 3:

Hello, happy weekend to our Canadian listeners.

Speaker 1:

Hello, hello.

Speaker 3:

I was just wondering. Maybe you or someone else can answer this question. I'm watching, you know the videos with Bernoulli and Bunsen.

Speaker 1:

Do they recognize themselves as the same breed? That's a good question. And, like, dogs generally can't see themselves, so they have a sense of self. They generally, like until about five to six years ago, maybe even longer, like 10 years ago, the prevailing thought in a lot of scientific discourse was that dogs don't have a sense of self, like, they don't know that they are themselves a thing. And they had.

Speaker 1:

They did some studies and they had to. You know, they had to work at it differently and dogs do have a sense of self. It was a paw test and they had like a. The dogs knew that if they were on a blanket their paws would get in the way. So they knew that their paws were attached to them and it was them that was causing the issue. So they got off the blanket. And then there's some scientists working on a smell test. So that's a long way to get to the whole idea of. It's probably unlikely that dogs recognize that they are the same breed. But I I did do like people ask that and I did a little bit of research and one animal behaviorist is like well, they may not know they're the same breed, but they do have similar.

Speaker 2:

Like they, they move similarly because of their physical structure, so it may be it's more fun for them to play with a dog of a similar breed because of that we went to a play day at waggles and there was a cute little bernie's mountain dog puppy and she was just like bunsen, shy and timid and not really coming out. But bernoulli is very gregarious and he's very in your face and likes to play. But with her he changed his demeanor and right away he went over to her and he was like, oh you, you're like me. And then they were pawing at each other like super cute, it was the cutest thing that you've ever seen.

Speaker 1:

I missed it on video.

Speaker 2:

It would have broke the internet but yeah, but they were the same breed, they look the same and have the same mannerisms. But Bernoulli recognized that he needed to be more gentle with her.

Speaker 3:

Oh, it was a kid, but you got such incredible instincts, they just know. Yeah, the reason I was asking is my dog is a black lab border collie cross and he has always connected with other labs and other border Collies much more than he does with other breeds of dogs, so I just wondered about that.

Speaker 1:

It could. Yeah, like the the behaviorist. It was actually in a blog post on Dr. I'll have to find it. I think it was on Dr Zazie Todd's blog. She, she actually is a animal behaviorist. Anyways, it's probably how they move and the energy that matches right.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, okay, that's very interesting. So anyway, to our Canadian friends, have a happy long weekend.

Speaker 1:

That's right, we do have a long weekend.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, we do. And only one more until summer's over. Bunsen and Bernoulli will like the snow. We're going to love to see videos of Bernoulli with his first snowfalls.

Speaker 1:

Oh, I can't wait, I cannot wait.

Speaker 3:

It's going to be so cute. Yeah, okay, thank you and happy weekend everyone.

Speaker 1:

Appreciate it.

Speaker 5:

Chris is nodding, but rolling back a little bit. Baden seems to react to other labs and, believe it or not, golden retrievers in a much more playful way, if you will, than, say, other dogs and especially Goldens. I don't know. Baden seems to borrow the Labrador silly brain cell around Goldens and they just both take off in a silly manner. That's so cute and I don't know if they's they move similarly. They're similar sized or he recognizes goldens as a more playful dog that is so tough.

Speaker 1:

You know, that sounds like a really fun scientific study. And, of course, chris and I, because we run the science podcast, we are always every week looking for the newest science that's going on with pets, so if that ever comes up, we'll make sure we tell everybody about it. Okay, let's do some comments, chris. Uh, so we have no more speakers, but obviously if you're on spaces and you want to come up, ask a question, be part of the conversation, we welcome you, so just request the mic. Kelly, who's watching on Twitter live, has made a comment. Has Ginger used her catio much this summer? So, chris, do you want to field that question?

Speaker 2:

We put her in her catio as often as possible. She loves being outside and I just refigured the top so it's instead of closed off off. It's a bit open with cage so she can't get out. So I'm excited to put her in there. But here's a here's a little problem, but it is a little problem, I'm not gonna lie.

Speaker 2:

Jason has added to our bird feeders. We don't want our bird feeder to be a cat feeder, so that's why we have her on leash, that's why we put her in a catio. Mice have gotten into her catio, but now I'm not sure with the open top if, because I saw a bird in there, but ginger wasn't in there. So I hope the birds are smart enough to not go in because they can get in and out with the same fencing that's on it or the same mesh or whatever it is. So I think they're just trying dive bombing in there. So we'll see, we'll see. I haven't had the opportunity to put her in since I changed the top, but it'll be like a skylight, so really good for her, but then she'll go yoink uh, it'll be like a cage match.

Speaker 1:

If she's in there with the bird, only one survives. Brother, that's what's going to happen. It'll be. That's my macho man impression.

Speaker 2:

I was thinking that well, we had Randy the macho man savage right here.

Speaker 1:

The cream rises to the top. Brother, I love that guy.

Speaker 2:

I love that guy too.

Speaker 1:

I was always him in wrestling video games. Anyways, no, yeah, she'll kill that bird. Chris, If that bird goes in it's going to be dead and it's on the bird. It has the whole of the earth to be and it chooses to be in the murder box with the cat Like it's all you can do. Okay, great comment from. Thanks for the comment there. Oh, who's that kelly?

Speaker 2:

that's kelly did.

Speaker 1:

I scared people away with my randy, savage. People are leaving. Sorry about that. Rumsaurus asked or made a comment on instagram. I have a doodle who loves all dogs but certainly he has a special spot for doodles and poodles, so it could be that energy. It's like you know, generally dogs of a breed have a similar physical structure and they might move similarly and it's a bit of mirroring. Who knows?

Speaker 2:

I did creep on Dr Zazie Todd's Twitter feed and she's participating in something called BarkFest and it's for book lovers, and so one of the sessions that they have is dog emotions that they're going to be talking about.

Speaker 1:

Oh, fun so it's something.

Speaker 2:

I put a couple of the posts up into the chat, up into the Jumbotron, the nest here on X, and if people are interested, maybe they can read a book and register and be part of the discussion. It looks like they're online.

Speaker 1:

You betcha. Yeah, dr Todd has been on the Science Podcast. She's written two books, one's called Wag, one's called Fetch, no One's called. Per Wag and Per Wag and Per About cats and dogs.

Speaker 2:

So I put one that's up for dogs and then another one that was for cats, because she talks about them both, which appeals to our audience, because we're not only dog people here, we're cat people too.

Speaker 1:

Going through the comments on spaces, just giving Tracy a remote hug, like a hug from far away. Tracy wrote just checking in. It's not a great day here taking grief one day at a time. If you remember, Tracy lost her cat Ricky. I've been to a cat cafe to pet and play with cats twice, which helps, and they have kittens, which are probably what Ricky looked like as a kitten. So we're all thinking about you, Tracy, and yeah, the grieving process just takes time and it affects everybody a little bit differently. Any other comments in spaces that you'd like to highlight, Chris? And then we'll go do one more from Metta Rich, you got your hand up and then we'll go to Adrian Go ahead, rich.

Speaker 5:

Yeah, I lost connection there for a few minutes. I don't know how much you heard, but Baden is a playful dog, even though he's slightly senior, but golden retrievers seem to bring out the one brain cell that he has for play, because he's always, always willing to play with them. You're saying about how dogs don't react, don't know that dogs are the same breed. Yeah, it might be something to do with movement and goldens and labs he's always ready to play with, and other dogs it takes just a little bit longer for him to warm up to them for play, if you will. So I don't know if that's.

Speaker 1:

Nope, we got.

Speaker 5:

your connection must have dropped right after that, because that's, we did hear that about Spaden, yeah but the other thing about awareness is he is so good around the grandchildren and he seems to be very aware that they're small humans and they get treated just slightly differently than the bigger humans. Not that he's a vicious dog, but he's much gentler around the small people, if you know what I mean that's so cool.

Speaker 1:

When dogs are, they know how to regulate themselves around little people. Um yep, bunsen is generally pretty good that way. Beaker is generally good. Brunelli's brunley's still learning. I'm pretty sure he would tackle a kid right now if they were running and he wanted to chase them. That wouldn't be good. So he's still. He's still a puppy, yeah well, what?

Speaker 5:

what is he about? 13, 14 weeks, now 18, 18 weeks?

Speaker 1:

yeah, four months and bit. We just did the new update growth size video.

Speaker 5:

Yeah, so you're still going to firm hand with the cow thing?

Speaker 1:

That's my plan. Yeah, all right, we'll go to Adrienne. Adrienne's waiting. Thanks, rich, adrienne, go ahead.

Speaker 4:

I just wanted to make two comments about the content that you've been posting on Twitter. One of them was that whenever we comment and like your videos and things, that it makes you smile, and I just wanted to say that it makes us smile as well. I think we all know that social media can be a cesspool, but you guys definitely bring the smiles every day, several times a day, so thank you for that. And I also wanted to say that I really love the Pet Olympics that you guys have been posting, and I've been scrolling through the pictures and things of all of your followers posting their pets digging and playing in the snow, and it's just, it's very, very cute playing in the snow and it's just, it's very, very cute. And I really appreciate everything you guys do to spread kindness and happiness on twitter rather than just the mess that it can be sometimes oh, that I'm tearing up, my eyes are all watery.

Speaker 1:

thank you, I was. You know, I was awake early and I was having a coffee and there's some content that is easy for me to make and there's some content that takes a bit of time to make and it takes a bit of time to do, like text from bunsen, right like that's that's joke writing, and I'm just blown away that there's like, if I look at how many people like texts from Bunsen and leave comments, it just it makes it so worthwhile to see that we do what we post people. It brings people joy and and that's why it's easy to do the hard stuff, I guess. So I so appreciate that, thank you.

Speaker 4:

Of course, and also I wanted to tell you that I'm sitting outside right now because it has been a thousand degrees at my house and it finally rained, and so the dog and the cat are both sitting here watching the phone as you guys are talking. Just their heads are tilting back and forth, and it's adorable.

Speaker 1:

Oh, thank you.

Speaker 2:

Thank you, thank you. Uh, the text from bunsen this week were on point. They were very funny. And last week, in the week before, like we've had three bangers in a row three weeks. Well, that's jason, because he's the funniest person I know, because he's like you should write the jokes. And then he's like where's the punch line?

Speaker 1:

yeah they have to build to. I don't know. I've gotten better, like I've gotten the. I think the text from bunsen joke writing has gotten better because I've gotten more experience. But we are like Chris and I have worked really hard, like the first three weeks of this this summer, july we we built text from Bunsen volume three, so it's been proofread and now I'm taking the book and making the e-book and then we'll start the audio book. So it's for people who love text from Bunsen. We do have the third version coming out for a pre-sale by the end of September, start of October, something like that. The calendar Chris is working on the special dates that go into it. I finished all of the pictures. We have a couple exciting things for people that love our stuff. The calendar's ready to go, probably next week, so we'll be looking to do a pre-sale for that for to give everybody kind of the best, best deal if you get it early. So all right, anybody else who would like to come up to speak, go ahead I saw.

Speaker 5:

I just had to go review the Bunsen text and I noticed he wasn't feeling well.

Speaker 1:

He got COVID actually and he's been really sick, but he's on the mend.

Speaker 2:

They went to Quebec. They had a great time in Quebec. And then Adam came home on Saturday and I said, oh well, do you work tomorrow, on Sunday? And he's like, no. I said, well, we're going to go, do like we're going to go to it's called Glenifer Lake here and would you like to come. He's like, well, I might be having some jet lag. And I said, oh okay, well, let us know in the morning if you're feeling, if you're feeling good. And he's like, well, no, I he was feeling tired and I'm like, oh yeah, just rest. He didn't have to work and then on Monday he had to work at, I think, 1130. So he had time to go to the gym in the morning.

Speaker 2:

And he came home from the gym and he's like I destroyed. And I said that doesn't sound right. And then I gave him like we still have COVID tests at home, the rapid tests and he's like, yeah, mom, it's positive. And I'm like, oh no. And then at work he called in sick and then they rearranged the schedule for everybody this week. They've been so awesome and accommodating for him to get better and get healthy, so that's better than him spreading it around to everybody.

Speaker 1:

But he's been really sick for like three days, like unable to do much besides come up for food and sleep in his room.

Speaker 2:

Well, it's been at least since last Saturday, jay, or even sooner, because he had a sore throat earlier than that.

Speaker 1:

I guess yeah, five days maybe.

Speaker 2:

Well, Saturday to. Saturday is seven days Go ahead, rich, yeah, have him feel better, better. Well, right now he's sitting with bunsen because bunsen is the biggest toddler baby ever bunsen we tried a new technique so that we didn't hear him barking, and it did not work. So we're gonna have to think, go back to the drawing board with that. Adam's home now. So I said, adam, can you please just go sit with him? And so that's what Adam's doing. He's just so. I said you can just sit with him and scroll your phone.

Speaker 5:

When I had a temperature from COVID and I'd be lying on the sofa and the cats thought and again, like Adam, not moving the whole whack. The cats thought, great, here's a non-moving hot water bottle, will just sit on, which one of the cats is fine. But ginger tom is a big boy and and when he lays on you, especially in the middle of the night, I sleep on my back and he lays on my chest and you sort of half wake up and your chest is all heavy. I'm just old enough to worry about things like coronaries and everything, oh man. And then there's this purring and this unlicensed acupuncture on your shoulder and you go oh, it's just him.

Speaker 1:

Is this a heart attack or a cat? Oh, it's a cat, thank goodness.

Speaker 5:

Wish Adam my best and hope he feels better soon. And COVID sucks. I've had a couple of times and it just it takes all the good out of one.

Speaker 1:

That's pretty draining.

Speaker 5:

It takes all the good out of one.

Speaker 1:

That's pretty draining. Okay, chris, we have a really, really wholesome comment on Instagram from the people watching on Instagram. Ramsora said I'm a recent follower and I love your content. This is the first time I'm listening to Pet Chat. I didn't know about the Science Podcast until just now. Definitely going to check it out and I love that. Thank you so much for that kind comment. And that's another thing that we put a ton of time into is the podcast, the Science Podcast. So actually I can turn this into a little ad for the Science Podcast.

Speaker 1:

If you didn't know, chris and I run the science podcast. It breaks down the latest science news and the latest science news that's happening with pets, and every week we have a really fun interview with somebody who's an expert in their field, usually a scientist and it's a lighthearted conversation with the scientists and then we usually ask them about their pets. The guest this week is Dr Kyle Stanley and he has a PhD in media, but he specializes in how pop culture and social media influence the world. So it was a really interesting conversation with this guy world. So it was a really interesting conversation with this guy and we got talking about the Royal family Chris, kate Middleton about how social media basically forced the Royal's hands to come out and talk about how Kate Middleton did have cancer. You might remember that because you were obsessed, do you remember? Like is Kate Middleton, does she have a body double? You're, you're. You were all into that when it was a thing on social media.

Speaker 2:

So no, jason, I was not. I was reading all about it for sure, and we were all going.

Speaker 1:

Oh, I hope she's okay yeah, of course it was all tinged and we hope she's okay.

Speaker 2:

Yeah it was all. It was good enough for me for them to say she needs time, she's going to reappear or she's going to resume royal duties at a later date. So I was okay, I was trusting the royal family. But then, you're right, social media did definitely, with all those conspiracy theories, ramp it up yeah they, they didn't.

Speaker 1:

They release a weird photo where it was edited and there's a floating hand and they're like what's going on with this photo? And they had to take the photo down.

Speaker 2:

So they had the Mother's Day photo which showed her, but it was edited. Yeah, and Kate Middleton said that she had edited it.

Speaker 1:

There was a viral post on Twitter, Chris. It was wishing the oldest five quintuplets a happy birthday.

Speaker 2:

Oh, I saw that the 90-year-olds.

Speaker 1:

The 90-year-olds, totally AI generated. That is a fake photo and it got millions of likes and shares and, if you look at it carefully like a bunch of them have six fingers or they've got something weird going on with them. So that was an AI photo. Did you see that one?

Speaker 2:

I briefly glanced at it, but I didn't engage with them. So that was an AI photo. Did you see that one? I briefly glanced at it, but I didn't engage with it.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, totally fake. Yeah, that was a totally fake thing. Wow, yeah, I know there's a lot of Facebook pages which are like 100% AI generated. That gets crazy, crazy shares and views. It's like this is a cute dog and you're like that's a cute dog. But you're like, wait a second. This dog is in a room and in this room is there's some nightmare fuel. There's something wrong with this photo AI to make cute stuff, but I don't know. I think we're at the end of the show. Should we do a draw?

Speaker 2:

Yes.

Speaker 1:

Okay, so we're going to do a draw and we will send a prize to whoever. If you are watching live, drop a comment so we know that you're still here. If you're a live viewer on video, you're just a number to us. We don't know if you're still here. So drop a comment and then you'll be in the draw. How many people are on spaces? Okay, how many? We've got one person commenting. Okay, pamela commented. Okay, we got one person. Okay, here we go. Yes, now they're. It's a bit of a delay to Instagram. I forgot.

Speaker 2:

Yes, 30 here in X Okay.

Speaker 1:

I don't like calling it X. Oh, we have a winner who is not on Spaces. Yeah, we have somebody who's not on Spaces. So somebody from Facebook has won Suzanne, who's watching live. Okay, so this is Suzanne, you won. You're the 35th number on my list, so congratulations. Suzanne is watching us live on Twitter video.

Speaker 2:

Suzanne send.

Speaker 1:

On Twitter video or on facebook video? No, twitter video. It it all emagulates to the comments between twitter and facebook into a feed.

Speaker 2:

Chris, it's weird, you don't get to see it but I saw suzanne's name on the bottom of the live here.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I just threw, put it up on live. So, suzanne, please dm us. If you're watching on twitter, you can dm us on twitter, we'll get to it and but if she's on facebook, can she dm us on facebook? What? No, I made a mistake. The she's on. She's watching on twitter oh, from twitter live twitter live.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, twitter live. This this is becoming a tech talk. It's not important, but I'm watching like two separate feeds because stupid stream yard or I don't know, it's dumb instagram. They aren't talking to each other, so I have to watch the instagram feed separate from the stream yard feed. It's a thing. It's cool, though, so where?

Speaker 2:

is suzanne from. Suzanne is from twitter live twitter live.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, if I. Yeah, so you can see. Do you see, when I put it up on the jumbotron, it has a little X symbol.

Speaker 2:

Oh, it does.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and then. So if somebody from Facebook makes a comment like Madison, it has a little F symbol.

Speaker 2:

Oh.

Speaker 1:

And then nobody on live gets to see the Instagram people, because it's a separate feed that only I see, but they get to see us, so it's a whole thing. It's a separate feed that only I see, but they get to see us, so it's a whole thing.

Speaker 2:

It's a thing, it's a time and a show.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, it is All right.

Speaker 2:

Congratulations, Suzanne. We will send you a prize. You just have to DM us your address.

Speaker 1:

That's right. Okay, and just a reminder. We're running a big sale this summer on all of our stuffed animals, so if you use the code so fluffy, save 15 on a bunsen beaker, ginger stuffy. So that's a great deal because they're inflation proof, because we bought in before things went bananas, which means you save on inflation. I don't know, I'm not an economist. It's a good deal. Okay, anything else to add before we wrap up? Chris?

Speaker 2:

I just wanted to give a shout out to Indra, our partner.

Speaker 1:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, with the Positivity Vibe Tribe. Yeah, definitely has a positive Twitter space where she talks about positivity, resilience and the being able to thrive.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, indra is a great follow.

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

All right, it's the wrap up music. Well, hey, thanks for coming to the show. To all of our new viewers who tuned in because you watched a puppy maul a cat, thank you very much. Thank you to the folks who followed us from our viral video. I do have to say that we have been working hard to grow Instagram and Facebook and Twitter and it's been really cool to see that we now have a growing community everywhere. We were mostly Twitter-centric. And to everybody watching us on Instagram, thank you.

Speaker 1:

Oh, chris, has Ginger Ginger's doing great. You know, during Christmas I think we had 21,000 followers on Instagram and now it's at 60-something. I don't know, I have to check. So it's more than tripled Facebook we didn't even really have. We had 1,000 followers and now it's getting close to 20,000. So thank you very much for joining us from these other platforms. It's a really fun community and we do this show every single Saturday Pet Chat and it runs kind of the same way. So it's kind of, I guess, because it's got a pattern, it feels very cozy. That's what I like about it. I look forward to running the show with Chris every week. All right, anything else, chris? Oh, there's Bernoulli.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I'm just doing show and tell. So this is Bernoulli.

Speaker 1:

We should have done you holding him because I'm just doing show and tell. So this is Bernoulli. We should have done you holding him because I'm so big. I don't think it shows off how big Bernoulli is because I'm already like a very tall guy, but when Chris holds him he looks like a monster. I think Chris is going to pick up Bernoulli.

Speaker 2:

No.

Speaker 1:

No, okay. I'm going to put Beaker here, yeah there's Beaker. Yeah, so if you're watching live, you can see them. Beaker is a good hiker, I'll tell you. Yeah, she's a good girl and bunsen is so handy going uphill. So whoever has bunsen, he just pulls you up the hill. So that is a good thing about having bunsen. Not so good going down steep slopes, we found out I had a little bit of fear in him beaker is just like what do to do?

Speaker 1:

like a little mountain goat moving around ever nearly was like launching, he was launching him like he was had a harness on and he was clicked into his back. And he was launching him like he was had a harness on it and he was clicked into his back and he was like whoa, and he was gonna jump down the hill and if I didn't have a death grip on him it would have gone badly and I was like, oh man, this little guy. And then he was fine because he just follows Beaker, because he loves her, so he just went right through the water. Beaker went through the water and he's like okay, I think he's like boy, that was deep, cause it was up to his head Like he almost had to swim across the Creek. Anyways, all right, so we'll wrap things up. Thanks for coming, everybody, we'll see you next week.
